Hi. Next week I will have the chance to metal detect at my Grandma's property. She lives in an old farmhouse built in the 1850s on a 143 acre farm. I know of the location of two other previous houses on the property, The original log barn is also still standing. I will only be there for a few days at most so I want to make sure I search effectively. Where are the best places to search for coins on a property like this? I was thinking around entrances and paths. Thank you in advance!

That being a start but myself I would check any roadways and streams places where people would be....maybe around large shade trees....places where people would go and spend some time.

Being that it's an 1850 farm house, I would check around any area that had a lot of activity, Ex; the outside of the house, property lines (as many have stone stacked walls to divide property lines which were built by the owner's or hired hands back then). Good Luck! Let us know how you do. I wish I was going with you.

For coins concentrate on the the above and...
-Check the area where the clothesline was/is. -Check around the outhouse. -Look for areas where they would get on and off horses. -Look for evidence of excessive alcohol consumption. -Areas where people would use keys. (Coins fall out of pocket here) -Old swings, look at suitable branches to find evidence. -Hit the field if you still have time, there might be coins here as well.
Cool relics can be found anywhere. If you wander around in all metal mode you might detect some lids or caps in a bottle dump. I have uncovered 5 separate bottle dumps on the old family farm. I have found well over a hundred intact antique glass vessels. Some even had marbles and buttons in them. It almost brought a tear to my eye to see so much wild coloured smashed glass at the bottom. Wicked shades of blue and purple, highly figured glass. Also real primitive looking stoneware. The farther down you go, the more the glass is broken, generally speaking, but there will be survivors so keep digging. Finding silverware is a possibility. This is a nice alternative to digging beer caps and rusty nails. I can almost promise you there is a good bottle dump there.
Square nails and tools are fun to dig for a while, iron debris can get tiresome at some farms. Then again I have found some cool iron, like a "faucet" type fixture and Chipendale's furniture feet shaped like fish.

I've hunted many old farms, the best spot is the front yard, and I've dug lots of old coins in the yard edge at the road.
When I listen to LED ZEPPELIN...so do my neighbors... Roll hunting since '77 Dirt fishing since '72

Don't forget the stone walls if there are any. I have found several nice decent coins and knives in stone walls.
