My set arrived the other day and it is done really well and the coin is really cool. Still confused about how it is the bicentennial when the song was written in 1814....but happy I bought the coin.

Is it based on when the poem was written or when the song was adopted?

PS
I've been on the fence about getting this because I'm not really into the modern commemoratives but my fiance and her family are from Baltimore and I thought that would be a cool little piece to share with her/them. And since you say it's really cool that's just all the more reason to get it.

I agree that issuing coins in 2012 to mark the bicentennial of a specific event that took place in 1814 seems a bit odd, but I've come to realize that it was the intent of Congress and the coin's sponsoring organization -- the Maryland War of 1812 Bicentennial Commission -- to create commemoratives that marked more than just the writing of the Star-Spangled Banner.

In the coin's authorizing legislation it states "The design of the coins minted under this Act shall be emblematic of the War of 1812 and particularly the Battle for Baltimore that formed the basis for the Star-Spangled Banner." So, though not promoted as such, the 2012 gold half-eagle and silver dollar authorized under the "Star-Spangled Banner Commemorative Coin Act'' can easily be seen as our country's War of 1812 commemorative coins and thus a 2012 release makes sense. If you check the obverse designs of the coins, each can be viewed as more of a general "War of 1812" theme, while the reverse designs are much more closely linked specifically to the Star-Spangled Banner theme.

To be equally confusing, I bought the set for my daughter because her birthday is July 4th.

I'm reading a book about the War of 1812 called Dawn's Early Light. Told in first person from key figures of the war. Great read so far, highly recommend.
