Hey guys

I stumbled upon an odd looking penny that somehow made it into my pre-'83 penny collection. The Penny itself seems to be the same size in diameter (maybe a hair bigger). Also seems to be the same thickness, although it does seem a TAD BIT thicker.

It seems to be aluminum? Or steel? Take a look for yourself..

The rear of the penny looks to have a perfect outer aluminum looking ring around it.

What could of caused this?

96-D-Lincoln-Cent---Error?

Thanks guys!

You think so? Even with that distinct ring around the rear edge? I am 99.9% certain that this is post mint, but I was just wondering what could cause this? Surely its not from just normal wear & tear, its only a 96.

I think it because of the "distinct ring arpound the rear edge" Sometimes it is impossible to say what caused (damage) but it is always possible to know what caused and error.

I would guess this is a " Dryer Coin". It may have rolled around in a clothes dryer for a while. Whatever caused it, one thing is certain...it's post-Mint damage.

Looks cool though. I think he's a keeper. Has a heated titanium shimmer look to it at the right angle.
Rest in Peace

Jenger , I think it's amazing that it survived all that wear and didn't die of zinc rot.

I keep all the odd coins that I find...I really don't know why, but I do...

Heh I actually found another one in my penny stash last night. Weird how I never noticed this before.. I guess I don't pay too much attention to pennies for one reason or another.

Looks like a fresh removal of the copper plating.

The core is zinc, aluminum has never been used for US coinage and steel was only used for cents in 1943.
