Back in 1983, the Royal Canadian Mint struck a silver medal to mark the Royal Visit of Prince Charles and Princess Diana. The medal was a proof strike, and was struck on the same planchet as that of the proof commemorative silver dollar of the time -- a planchet that was 50% silver/50% copper with a diameter of 36.07 mm.

Does anyone know why a commemorative silver dollar planchet was used for the medal rather than a planchet of a distinct size (e.g., the size used for the 1939 Royal Visit silver and bronze medals). Was it simply a matter of convenience?

Any insights would be much appreciated.

Commems, I do not know why but, in my opinion that is a terrible portrait.

Seconded.
I have the British crown commemorating their wedding, and while Diana can be mistaken for a man on it, the portraits are still way better than here. This one looks like Charles is ungodly ugly and Diana has a mask on

their faces are thinner, not as rounded. IMO - The Royal Mint had the portrait of the newest duchess too round.

These coins are not sterling nor 50% as some suggest. They are poorly struck brass with silver plating. About as low quality as the RCM can do.

My shop has an XRF tester and we did an acid scratch test when the result of the XRF indicated less than 15% silver. Clearly silver plated.

Unable to find examples of replica medallions online so I suspect that the original composition was silver plated brass.

@Commems:

Did you find the answer for the question, interesting.

I've seen this medalion previous year in the Toronto Coin show, in the Library.

One of the dealers had it, the medalion placed with the Coat of Arms side up. I was interested till I saw the faces ...Dealer honestly said, that it "has some silver content, but he doesn't know exactly".

I have always sold these to my refiners as 50% silver without any sort of complaint, so I continue to buy and sell them as though they are such.

CCN continues to list this as a one dollar coin in the special commemorative mint issue trends.

Better get a new testing machine these medallions were struck on the exact planchette used for the dollars. Agreed the portrait side is not the best.

Its those two-thirds profiles. I don't know if its because they never translate well into a high relief, engraved medium, but the 2011 Continuity of the Crown portraits suffer the same horrifying, misshapen look.

I couldn't find any coins featuring him, but I found something- I don't know if this is a joke or what, but here it is anyway.
