1853-Gold-Dollar-Fake?-Or-RealWondering if there are any gold dollar experts that can tell me if this coin is fake or real? I am inclined to say fake, but I figured I would see what the CC says.

IMO, it's a cast copy, probably the correct composition. Weight, diameter?

If this one was offered to me I would pass on it. It looks a lot like those that came out of Lebanon in the 1960's and 70's. Very mushy detail and a surface that looks like it was cast.

I don't have a good feeling about this one. The details are mushy, bubbly surface, and something about the rim looks weird.

I think it's a fake. The mushy details and the pimples on the surface are the giveaway for me.

I agree that is a fake, but it may be a jeweler's copy, made of good gold. It needs to be accurately weighed and measured for thickness and diameter to give a good clue as to how pure the gold may be, or if it is just gold plated.

Thanks for the input everyone! I was pretty sure. Now I am certain. I was hoping it was real because it is definately higher MS.
