I too liked that story. First thing that comes to mind is I was wondering how the people that left it there went nuts looking for it. Or the ones that left it there wanted to go back for it but something interferred. Sure would be interesting to know how those got there and by who.

Carl: the other side of the story could be the owner of the coins could have been killed in the destruction of that fort and all ties to their ownership was lost. However we'll never know the true story.

What really surprised me is the coins could have remained hidden for so long. I know that when I go to area with ruins that I poke around to see what I can find. I can't imagine that it took over 600 years of poking around no one found them until now. They certainly had to have been well hidden or the college kids did more mucking around than ever. If I had found the coins I believe it would be a test of my integrity and I hope that I could pass the test. It sure would be a burden.

That too amazes me. However, there are so many places on Earth where things have been covered up, lost, buried, etc.
For example if you remember all that stuff not long ago on TV about a hidded place by Al Capone. Of course when finally opened it was empty. Similarly when they did the Wacker Drive reconstruction in Illinois, they found a room under that street, buried way back before streets were put in. That too was empty. My wife said that when they were kids in farm lands, most kids buried coins in a jar somewhere for a rainy day. Naturally after many years all forgotten.

Carl also having lived in rural Illinois for many years I remember Indian mounds in many a farmer's field. In fact there are a number of mounds still undisturbed within forty miles of an Illinois University (the farmer will not let them touch it) and they are chomping at the bit to dig it up. Also in the area is an old hideout for Al Capone (don't let Geraldo know about it or we'll have another made of TV special).

Just saying ---

(edit and off topic also) Growing up in Chicago myself and some high school friends used to explore some of the abandoned underground railroad tunnels that are under downtown Chicago (not the El). We found some cool stuff before we were ran off and told not to come back (but we did). Some of those old tunnels are still in use today for undergroung storage.
