Hello all!

A relatively new member of this forum, but I have collected coins (primarily world coins) for a number of years. Over that time I have come across a number of pieces I suspect as being contemporary counterfeits (as opposed to the modern variety). I was wondering if anyone could provide any information on this coin?

I will update with weight once I am able to do so!

This is a genuine coin, and is indeed an 1842. This year had both a small and large letters variety, yours is the one with small letters. Being off-center is not particularly uncommon for these.

What makes you suspect this coin may be a contemporary counterfeit in the first place ?

bjorn I agree the coin is real - nothing too suspicious about the strike. Dies were not well aligned but fairly typical.

Thanks for the advice all - I think the colour of some of the toning threw my a bit... it looks sort of coppery to me. I will be likely be a asking about another cap and rays coins shortly as well! ;)
