Hi,
I just wanted to show this picture and try and get some sort of information and/or confirmation of what this coin is. It's not a complete mystery to us as we have seen similar coins on the internet (we are not coin collectors), but it does seem to be a mystery as to how we ended up with it (long story).
Anyway, we think this might be a Corietauvi silver coin, possibly from Ferriby in Linconshire, and it seems to be very similar to types with a horse on one side and a boar on the other. As you can see it's slightly worn away on one edge but seems to match size wise as it measures about 14-15mm across.
If anybody could help with any more information about the history, or your thoughts on if we are correct, and how unusual this coin may be, we'd be very interested to find out more.
Many thanks, Chris

I have seen these before, but I know so very little about them. Apparently, there was a large hoard of them discovered recently. How large? I can't say as I cannot seem to put my hand on the article, but I will keep looking. Your coin attributes as VA 857-1:

British Celtic Corieltauvi - Hostidius Unit, Ca 55-45 BC. Silver, 0.48 grs. Boar right / Horse left with pellet ring in front and below.

For those on here who are unfamiliar with the history behind these little gems:

Quote:
The Coritani / Corieltauvi were a collection of small tribes, centred on a swathe of territory through Leicestershire, Nottinghamshire to Lincolnshire and perhaps including lower S. Yorkshire. Coritani coinage in the first century was regularly struck by two rulers at once, and at one time by three, apparently colleagues.

I was unable to establish a value for your coin, as the only Corieltauvi coins I can find for sale are gold staters. I believe your coins value should be around $200-$300, as I believe your coin is in rather good condition.

I don't know if I've provided any information you didn't already know, but I appreciate you posting the coin here regardless. A great piece of British Celtic history.

I did find one for sale at this location:

http://www.ancientimports.com/cgi-b...=Corieltauvi

It is selling for $265, and not in nearly as nice of condition as your coin.

Oh, and btw, welcome here.
