Found this in change on a recent trip to NYC. (I also found a Fine 1939 Jefferson nickel on the same trip.)

It's obvious that this must have come from someone's collection--nothing could stay in circulation that long and still be beautiful. And that opens up another part of the story--why would someone put their collection into circulation? Not having enough money during poor economic times, perhaps. And not knowing they could sell it at a profit to a coin dealer. The possibilities go on.

It's an attractive coin and a nice find :)

As to whether the collector put it into circulation or not IDK but there could be many explainations.

For instance a non-collector clears the house of someone who has died and unearths some lose change or someone has their hoard stolen and the theifs don't know what they have. It could simply have fallen down the back of a piece of furniture and sat for many years before being rediscovered and spent, or an unruly teenager may have been short and nabbed it from dads collection to spend.

There are many scenario's I would conssider more likely than the original collector spending it but whatever the case you were the lucky one to find it :)

My mom's boyfriend told me that they found a big bag of Morgans that a family member had hoarded. They put them in a bowl and put them by the front door. Whenever someone would go out, they'd grab a handful for spending money. This was in the mid 80s and they were all well educated and knew the value of money. Still, to them it was just cash.
