Every time I dump coins in the coin machine, I always check the rejection tray. I go to TD bank and use their Penny Arcade. I have never known them to spit out silver but a few days ago it spit out a silver dime. A few days later I went back and it spit out a 1940 Quarter. (Both must have been from a previous dumper).

The 1940 Quarter looked strange to me so I compared it to my other silver quarters.(It is not magnetic. It seems to be the same size as the silver quarters.) Let me know what you guys think.

Pic 1 is of 2 silver quarter edges & the 1940 edge on the bottom..

Pic 2 shows the ridges of a silver quarter..

Pic 3 shows the edges of the 1940. (Slight ridges, looks worn)..

Pic 4 shows the face of a silver quarter..

Pic 5 shows the face of the 1940 quarter. (A darker gray to the eye)

Pic 6 shows that the silver quarter weighs 6.3 grams on my cheap scale..

Pic 7 shows the 1940 quarter weighs 4.7 on my cheap scale..

from the appearance I started to think a slight " Dryer Coin" effect, but the weight is throwing me off

It's very strange. I though Dryer Coin too. That would explain the wear, and maybe even the discoloration to the eye. But not the weight.

Have you done the "ding" test? Frop a known silver quarter a couple times onto the desk top and note the sound. Compare that the the sound of your target quarter onto the same surface.

The coin looks grainy like it was cast.

When dropping it on my table, it sounds the same as the rest of the quarters. However, when flipping it into the air, it does not ring the same as the other silver quarters. It almost has an empty sound.

If 25% weight loss were from wear, it would be a smooth disk. Must be fake.

Why fake a 1940 quarter? Maybe it was minted on a thin planchet?

Back at that time there was incentive to fake it. You could buy something with a quarter. If you had a bag of fakes you could buy something decent. I have a fake 1935 Australian florin. That roughly transfers to 20c and was probably produced around the same time. The difference in weight and the general look of it would be enough for me to declare this quarter a fake.

Large cents were counterfeit in 1840. If something has value, someone will fake it.

It's still very interesting. I like how the Penny Arcade knew to spit it out.
