A wonderful example of the rule of thumb, "Buy the coin, not the holder." I saw this coin being offered for sale. It is graded by PCGS and I was astounded to see the grade on the holder. What do you think the grade on this coin should be?

MS61?
I'm terrible at guessing grades above XF, but I can't see how it could grade higher than this. Probably lower.

Guessing MS-61. Has chatter marks across the eagle and some minor hits to the obverse

It looks like a MS-64 but I would guess it was graded as a MS-66.

I'd go with MS64, but I think they gave it a 66.

A 63 at best imo. Look at those marks on the eagle's head! And there are plenty of marks on focal areas of the obverse too.
Rest in Peace

A lot of contact marks for a quarter, therefore MS61/62 at best.

The dies which struck this coin are quite worn. Loose some value because of this.

There is an ugly row of contact marks on the reverse, extending the the eagle's breast, and up into the neck.

Without those marks, MS64, MS62 or 1 with them, unfortunately.

Since you were astounded Flip, I'm going to guess that it was because the grade was a little lower than you'd expect. So I'll say AU58.

A few of you were right on the money (pun intended)! PCGS must have missed this coin in quality control, because they gave it a...
