I've seen several "Pattern coins" up for auction recently (resession brings out collections) and wondered about their true value. One from 19th Century caught my eye. Since they have no equivilent, I realize they are rare but how do you rate them?

Yes they're rare! Extreme rarities in many cases with 1-10 known for a large number of patterns. The coins themselves are attractive too and have the appeal of being the representation of what might have been. Many of them just don't come up for auction and are currently in strong hands. In addition, the Smithsonian and other museums have many, some of which are unique. I agree that you should get a book about them. It's an interesting topic.

They are rare but not too pricey if you compare how low the mintage is. HOWEVER, there isn't too much demand thats why they are cheap.

Also keep in mind that patterns are *very* often counterfeited.

I only have a couple up on The Black Cabinet, but there are many more in my collection to go:

Some pattern coins are quite common, some are excessively rare.

An an example of a common pattern is the Euro set of pattern coins with different design, to the to the as yet to be issued official coins. They were released so that banking staff and the general public would become familiar with the new modules of coins, and were released a year or so before the similtaneous first issue of the official coins.

Examples of patterns that are execessively rare are the experimental designs that normally never leave the Mint, and the few that are struck are usually destroyed.
