I received two wheat back Lincoln pennies as change today. A 1953-D and 1958-D. They were both light brown (opposed to that really old dark brown that I usually get). They also had very little wear. Sharp shapes and nice deep cameo. I know they aren't worth anything but I love getting old coins!

I also got two 1965 and 1976 quarters.

WHOOT!

Hi Carl,

I spend about 2-3 months a year in San Francisco. So I take advantage while I am there (here). I am going back home in September so I am doing my best to nick all the older coins!
Rest in Peace

I actually found a 2p (UK) coin about a month ago! The person who had it (at a fast food restaurant) thought it was Canadian!
Rest in Peace

Hi again & gaelic_femme. You would be surprised what people don't know about their own money, even store clerks and bank employees. I've had trouble spending a 50c piece and a $2 bill before.

Numismo,

Sorry I think I may have been unclear. I got a 2p coin in the USA. The cashier thought it was Canadian. I dont think anyone back home would not know what a 2p coin was lol.

However, two years ago on my stay in the States I had a few two dollar bills and tried to use them at a petrol station and the guy secretly called the cops thinking I was trying to pass counterfeit money! Then, the police officer had never seen one before either and had to call for back up as well! I said something like if I was going to make counterfeit money wouldn't I use a higher note? He didn't like that and I ended up spending two hours at the petrol station dealing with a moody copper lol.

Ah, ignorance. Makes for great entertainment (and outrage on occasion). Reminds me of a good old urban legend in the US about a guy who tried to spend a $2 bill at a Taco Bell...

That was sad, and funny. I had a young clerk reject an old $50 bill at a Walmart. Congrats on the finds and welcome. You should have a real opportunity to trade coins with the americans at the olympics.

Oh, and if you get to visit Washington DC, get rolls from several banks. You never know what you'll find.
