I have just come accross a 1897 2.5 shilling, it was amongst a load of pritish coins, does anyone know of its value?

A pic would definitely help ID and value it... My guess is that it's South African (14.13 grams of .925 silver) which should be worth anywhere from $10 to $30 in circulated condition.

British 2½ shilling coins say "halfcrown", not "2½ shillings". 1897 ones look like this.

Boer Republic (South Africa) halfcrowns look like this, with "Zuid Afrikaansche Republik" on the obverse.

Another possibility is a piece of play money, similar to the one in this old thread.
