I've had a hard time attributing this 1880S. So far I figured out that it is definitely Reverse C3c. The date keeps getting me though. I've eliminated a few obverses but am really not sure. I was using a 16x loupe and I've taken a picture of the date with a 100mm macro lens.

Hi just wanted you to know it takes much more than just a date shot to figure out any VAM. To start with we need a full shot of the OBV and reverse as well as some close up shots of the date(yours is nice) and mint mark..these are the starting points, as well as anything you may thing is relevant or odd about your coin, and pics of that to..This takes alot of guess work or opinions of what "could be" down to what it most likely is...Gene

Hi Gene,
I'll get some good shots of obverse and reverse. The only reason I thought it might be acceptable to shoot just the date is that the reverse I narrowed it down to pretty much has only different date variations, with an few exceptions of different unique die markers that I eliminated as possibilities. That being said, pictures on the way!

1880-s is a hard year, but there is hope as you have a lot of polishing lines on the reverse, It has the Large "S" mint mark, so far I have found VAM 70 and VAM 88 as possible matches, with 88 being an interesting possibillity..you appear to be shooting with one light so the possible pitting I see around the eye and ear are very hard to see though I think I do. you can tell better with the coin in hand...G

It does look as though there could be some rusted die traits. Maybe very early. It is hard to tell with the light I'm using.

I don't think it is VAM 70 because my coin is lacking some reverse die markers listen on 70. I looked at VAM 86 and my coin has all of the reverse die markers there and it is a C3c reverse. Hard to tell without a microscope. It's low MS coin so all the micro nicks in the finish are very shiny and distracting and there are lots of them.
