I've seen a number of people talk about carrying a certain coin as a "pocket piece," but I can't figure out what you actually do with one. Is it just something you carry around in your pocket for good luck? Or do you carry it around to show random strangers?

Back when I used to actively collect pocket watches, I always carried one on me wherever I went. It was nice when people asked me about it and I could show them, but it was also a functional timepiece. I'm assuming nobody would ever actually spend their pocket piece, so it wouldn't be considered "functional" in any way, would it?

I'm tempted to start carrying around an old beat up Morgan dollar or a Walking Liberty half, but other than weighing down my pocket and potentially getting lost I can't quite see the benefit...
Rest in Peace

Do with it what you will! I have one that was my Grandfather's, he originally had it in a belt buckle and the reverse got tarnished so he started "carrying" it with his other change to get rid of the tarnish and to show it off to the grand kids. He gave it to me back in 1981 to hold onto for him, and I did, and here it is;

Yep, I carry around a (reaching into pocket) 1907-O Barber Half for show and tell. One of the guys I work with about had a cow when he saw that I was carrying it in my pocket, unprotected.

I will have to see if I have a "before" image of the half dollar.

Sadly, when you work from home the way I do, there are no co-workers to play show and tell with...

I carry a Mercury dime for good luck when I golf, but it never seems to bring me any. When I use it as a ball marker on the green, it is funny to see the looks people give me since most of them have no idea what it is until I tell them.

I carry around a Wheat penny or another common circulating coin just for something to do with my hands because I'm fidgety. It also reminds me of the joy coin collecting brings me, which is nice too.

I just carry mine around and show it to people who express an interest in coins. I change mine occasionally but right now I've got 2, a 1746 sixpence and a Maria Theresa Thaler.

Did it used to be a 1964 mint half dollar before you started carrying it?

well, when I ordered it, the description said near mint, not mint, it came with a plastic holder but the coin wasnt in the holder, I had to put it in myself, so technically its circulated now but its still got the shine and luster of being mint

Actually, that gives me an idea...

Years ago I had a pocket watch made in 1883 and decided to use a Morgan dollar as a fob. So I got a little bezel for Morgan and attached it with a chain. I think I still have that bezel somewhere. If I can find a decent chain that's not likely to break, maybe I can use it to add a Morgan or Peace dollar to my key chain.
