What does fishing for catfish with one's bare hands
have to do with coins?

Noodling, is fishing for catfish, using only your bare hands. The sport started in the southern United States but has since grown in popularity, expanding its practices to some midwestern states. Noodling is currently legal in Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Alabama, Georgia, Missouri, Illinois, Tennessee, Arkansas and Kansas.

Method:

Noodling can definitely be considered a cheaper and more dangerous form of fishing. Most catfish live in holes or under deep brush in rivers and lakes. The noodler will get in the water and will feel around for "catfish holes" with their feet and arms. The noodler than sticks their arm in the hole, with the plan that the catfish will bite down on their arm, in self-defense. If the catfish is large enough the noodler can grab it by the gills.

Dangers:

It is important to have a spotter with you while noodling, to help bring the catfish to shore. Depending on the size of the catfish and the noodler a spotter may be necessary so the fish doesn't drag the noodler underwater. Losing fingers is also a risk, it could be from the bit itself, or an infection that was caused from the bite. Another huge risks to noodlers are other animals that could be hiding in "catfish holes." Alligators, snakes, snapping turtles, beavers, muskrats, and other animals have been known to takeover "catfish holes."

Okie Noodling Tournament:

The Okie Noodling Tournament is the largest Noodling tournament in the world. This year will be the 13th annual tournament. It is taking place at Wacker's Park in Paul's Valley, Oklahoma on June 23, 2012. Because of the growing popularity of the sport, and features done in the LA Times and The Washington Journal the grand prize in 2011, was $1,000 for the biggest catfish caught. Attendance for the 2011 Okie Noodling Tournament was well over 5,000 people.

OK. How did you Aussies come up with the term?

I am pretty sure that the term "Noodling" started in Aus on the opal fields.
It was used to describe the activity of the people that went through the tailing's looking for opal.
It is now used to describe the activities of coin roll hunters in Aus.

Ah yes - the tailing of opals - that makes a lot of sense.
I trust you Aussies can take a bit of humor?
I meant no offense, but just a small attempt at adding to the occasional
inclusion of a, how to say it, "nudge nudge, wink wink bit of a joke!"

No offense taken whatsoever, your post was very informative
We have some absolutely huge Catfish in Aus but they have 3 large spikes on them, 1 on the top of the head and 1 either side near the pectoral fins.
The spikes are similar to those found on stingrays and can inflict quite nasty and painful punctures.
They also tend to live in the same areas that the saltwater crock's and bull sharks like.
This is probably the reason why us Aussies only noodle coins and not Catfish

Oh trout1105!
All of the pieces about "noodling" fell into place today.
Romney, opponent to Obama, announced his choice of vice president today.
The VP was stated to have, among his hobbies, "noodling."
Seems the man likes to stick his hands into holes at the bottom lakes and streams.
[And I thought he was a coin collector - silly me!]
May I say, "Hail Australia!"
Jolly good friends to have.

Putting my arm into dark muddy holes in the water no thanks. I'm sure some of the catfish are no match for some of the more ferocious banks teller out there though get them on a bad day and explain why you are returning $1000+ in silver coin its not fun

Yeah, myself as well,I've been collecting Coins for over 50 years and never heard the term 'Noodling' in relation to searching through Coins. The first time I come across this term was in the 4WD Magazines in the 1980's & 90's in relation to Fossicking old Mining leases but I guess somewhere along the line its been applied to Coins as well. The first time I saw it mentioned in relation to Coins was on the ebay Forums a few Years ago then when I joined this Forum the meaning became clear.
