I have this coin and it has a crack that appears to go from front to back. On the Obverse-at rim edge between left wing and star tip. On reverse at 4th E of Independence. Fracture appears to continue to C and E of Cent in Centennial. Has anyone ever seen anything like this?

This coin is in a slabbed ANACS holder - graded MS65. Is this possible?

Any input is greatly appreciated.

Your pictures are a bit fuzzy but it appears to be a planchet crack. Planchet cracks do have value as an error but I am not sure if would add any premium to a coin that is already fairly valuable. As a note, ANACS will only slab it as an error with a notation on the label if the submitter paid extra for the error attribution service.

Yes, I have other pictures, but without the right equipment taking close ups is hard to do. I will be investing in that equipment very soon - if I am going to spend this type of cash on coins I might as well have the right equipment. This crack almost makes the coin ready to "crumble" in this area. Thank you for the quick reply.

I would agree. Cool find. I've only seen a couple in all of the classic commemorative series, and only a handful of small clips. They're rare, but I don't know how much of a premium it would command.

I wonder if it would be worth a resubmit to get that attributed on the label.

Indeed ... to the CCF and to the commemorative forum.

I have never seen a planchet crack on a classic silver commemorative ... so perhaps this error might be of some interest to a specialist collector.

Bear in mind that the USA classic silver commemorative series is not known as a mainstream pursuit ... so the potential market for an error in the series is very limited.

IMHO ... enjoy the coin in your set as-is for what it is.

There are two planchet cracks on Missouri commems pictured in the heritage archives. One of them sold twice, the second time $100 lower.

P.S. Sometimes you can get good pics if you use a magnifying glass next to your lens. It really only works with smaller magnifying glasses, but its worth a try if you have one. It's the only way that I'm able to get closeup pics.

Thank you - Everyone for the comments. I am going to try the magnifying glass trick - I do have a hand held 3x. I was using a 5x with lamp with the pictures I posted but not too easy to get a good picture. If I get better pictures I'll post those. :)

Definitely a most interesting piece -- first one I've seen.

As the issue is with the coin's planchet and not the result of a coinage die defect, your Texas could very well be unique -- possibly a single bad planchet among the 10,000 used by each mint (P, D, S) to strike the Texas coins in 1935. Definitely a conversation piece for one's collection!

I don't think there is a real need to have it resubmitted (and pay the additional fee) to have the 'Cracked Planchet' added to the holder's label. If it's visible to the naked eye, it will be easy to explain/point out to a potential buyer if you decide to sell it. I say this because there isn't a huge collector base "fighting" over the available 'cracked planchet' coins -- many (most?) sell for only a minor premium over the same coin without such a planchet defect.
