I just returned from town where I stopped by a convenience store and talked to the clerk about coins.

She was very excited about a Canadian quarter she had just taken out of the cash register. She asked me about it, but my Canadian reference book is too old to help.

It was a shiny, new looking Canadian quarter, 2000 I think. On the reverse as best I can remember was a bird, fish, trees and rain clouds.

Her questions were:

1. Why was it different than the usualal Canadian quarter?

2. And, she wondered what metals it was made from.

If anybody can help me with answers to those questions, I'll pass the information on to her.

Thanks!!

Three times since 1992, Canada has issued several series of commemorative circulating quarters, 12 in a given year. The 1992 theme was "Canadian Provinces & Territories"; the 1999 theme was "Months" (leading up to the millennium), the 2000 theme was... I'm not sure what to call them... "national attributes"? Things like "Health", "Wisdom", "Community", "Pride", etc..

The Krause catalogue is woefully lacking in pictures to distinguish these modern circulating commemoratives, but from the description it sounds like your friend has the one themed "Natural Legacy". Here is my example:

So it's a circulating commemorative quarter - if you said it's "sort of the Canadian equivalent of the State Quarters", you wouldn't be too far wrong.

According to Krause, these coins are pure nickel.

Canada has numerous commemorative quarters. Right now the big years for them were 1992, 1999, and 2000. But there are so many really!

Oh oh, now I know the next coins I'll be chasing, after I've got the US State Quarters up to date, I'll definitely want some of these Canadian commemoratives.

Thanks for the information. I'll pass it along to my friend. The coin pictured is like the one she found.

Just to add to all this - the 1992,1999 and 2000 were also issued in special sets with the coins made of silver.

True.
Canada puts out some beautiful coins.I have to agree with Sap,and couldn't have said it better!!

I'm at a point where,Canadians are so overwhelming(so much to choose from, but so awesome, and so truly creative),and I can't keep up with them all.

I've found my passion with them are older coinage, and am going to focus on those only.

I intend to sell off my collector coins,if so interested let me know, these coins include the comemmorative coins stated in this topic, plus more.
