On the lighter side of things, does anyone here do post processing on the coins that lean more towards "artsy" and not as much towards the spirit of the coin? I'm not talking Instagram photos, but something other than just shooting the coin and chasing absolute realism on the screen. Even some decent BW conversions.

I get distracted when I'm trying to go for realistic and trail off onto stylized. Even off angle shots. More like still life photos made with coins instead of fruit in a cornucopia!

I'll put some on the thread when I get a chance. Love to see what else you guys are doing in a more creative fashion!

While I talk about trying for the "in-hand" look, I don't believe it exists, at least not in a single image. What I try for is the "best looking" image I can create of a coin that neither over-emphasize nor covers up anything. I love toned coins and try my best to bring out their color and subtleties (like the Captain did above). The end result is an aesthetically-pleasing representation of the coin that shows off it's qualities but that you would never see under any conditions "in-hand".

The 1919 above is an example of a coin that has two completely different looks, and they can't be captured in one picture. At first look, it's a darkish gray with a few orange splotches, but with some odd gloss or iridescence about it. When it hits the light right, it explodes and looks just like that picture. If I were to sell the coin, I would have to show two different pictures - the above, and one showing the gray color - because neither would be an honest representation of the coin by itself.
