Pontos, Amisos AE30

Diameter: 29.7 mm
Weight: 19.1 grams
Obverse: Helmeted head of Athena
Reverse: Perseus, holding harpa in right hand, Medusa's head in left, Medusa's body at his feet

Pontos,-Amisos-Ae30.-Athena-/-Perseus
Pontos,-Amisos-Ae30.-Athena-/-Perseus

dougsmit => you made the following quote in another thread:

Quote:
keep on the lookout for a decent specimen of the Amisos showing Perseus holding the severed head of Medusa with the body at his feet gushing blood from the neck ...

... Most of these are either weak at the bottom or missing the head of the hero. Nice ones with all clear should be bought when found.

Curious? => is this coin a "nice one" and if so, what do you figure it is worth?

thanks

An impressively large coin! Is there an estimate of date? The style has Roman influence.

There is one on Vcoins selling for $450, but I think the one you posted looks better. I know nothing about these coins, so I can't tell you anything about rarity. Take a look: http://www.vcoins.com/ancient/steve...dProduct=305

This is the nicest one I recall seeing. Certainly it could be stronger on the Medusa body and Perseus face but so many of them are so very much worse. Note also it clearly shows the cutting tool that he used to sever the head. As far a price, I'd guess $500 but if a dealer did not realize how much better it is than most, it could go cheaper. What is it worth? What you had to pay.

Hey, just in case anybody follows the NFL, there is an NFL-Pool contest trying to start-up in the Quiz section of the CCF (NOTE => I went in it last year and it was pretty fun and pretty easy, even if you don't follow football too closely) ...

=> anyway, this is merely a heads-up in case somebody wants to toss their ancient hat into the ol' ring ... there are still 10 spots available

Im not big into the NFL...but I can see a need for C-A-A, part of the Board. Coin attics anonymous. It might be better for the lot of us, maybe outline some kind of 12 step program, to get off coins.

I never wanted said, "Mommy, I wanna be a coin junkie when I grow up."

Maybe we should find some kind of replacement therapy...

I almost succumbed to temptation this afternoon. Just two more weeks. I might have to get someone to strap me down.
