Got this nickle dollar in a yard sale. Is this an error coin? Thanks.

Looks like a "railroad rim", which means struck partially in collar. Good eye!!

That would be a partial collar strike error, nice find The collar, aka the third die, was not fully engaged when the coin was struck which left part of the edge unreeded. Is it straight all the way around or tilted?

What is happening with the legends on the reverse--was the coin double-struck too?

It looks straight all the way around, not tilted.

One more picture. The obverse looks quite normal.

Thanks and appreciate for all reply. I learn something about "railroad rim" now.

However, I have a question. How did the railroad rim and double struck happen to this coin at the same time?

I don't have a clue about the mechanics of this error--but it's really cool!
Mike Diamond has experience with error coins from many countries--perhaps he'll care to comment?

Can you reshoot the reverse? I think there is some reflection from the prooflike surfaces in play here.

Perhaps there's some reflections, but look at the denticles from 7:00-10:00, as well as the corners of the canoe.

Try to reshoot the reverse but can not get a better one. Finally I scan the coin but the double struck is not clear in below image.

hard to tell from the pictures if it is double struck or it can just be severe Machine Doubling , since it wasn't fully in the collar . Is the coin a specimen strike ? Hard to tell from the pictures . Was it in a capsule when you received it ?

I have no answer for the specimen strike either.

When I bought it, it was mixed in a plastic bag with other nickle dollars together. I even did not know there was an error coin in the plastic bag, but I am sure that no capsule when I bought it.

That coin is a beauty. It starts with out of collar strike, double strike and misaligned die. Then too boot it probably is a PL coin. This coin should command a good premium. How much did you have to pay if you don't mine me asking? It sure looks like a $100 coin to me. Any thoughts?

Thanks for comment. Actually I bought it with other nickle dollars together in a yard sale. There are about 50 nickle dollars in one plastic bag and I paid $50 for this bag.
