I'm sure this has been asked before but since I am celebrating my 50th post I just decided to ask away.

Let's say you have a coin with moderately significant value for illustration purposes only let's pretend this coin is something like an 1895-S Morgan in VF condition. I'm looking at a retail store that has that coin for $1099.

Now let's say that coin has a decent sized gouge in the rim. Let's say like this coin I saw in another thread. And that damage is limited strictly to the rim.

How do you value that coin?

No Grade- whatever details... if it's a truly rare date it'll sell for maybe 25% of book, maybe a little more.

Valuation becomes pretty personal with things like this. Obviously that would slab Details only, but where a cleaned or Environmental Damage detail on the surfaces would drop the value by 50% or more, I think this one would fetch a little more than that.

A coin that badly damaged can only be sold as a cull/filler, throw the book away on value as it ranks the same as a coin with a hole in it.
