ebay sent out their Fall update letter...

Here is my concern - ebay will begin charging FULL final value fees to sellers who cancel an auction that currently has bids(FVF will be based on the current highest bid).

ebay is saying that their customers are getting angry about auctions ending early, and they don't want to lose their customers...I understand that much to an extent. I've canceled auctions for multiple reasons, some of which had bids, but never because the price wasn't where I wanted it to be.

As a seller I can cancel bids any time I want, so why can't I just go in cancel all bids then end the item?

Does this mean we are going to see a lot less auctions starting lower?

Or does this mean we can find more steals because sellers aren't going to end items early knowing they have to pay the FVF if they cancel? Someone who wants $200 for a coin but bidding is only at $150, do you cancel the item and pay the $15 in FVF's knowing you'll have to pay another $20 in FVF's when you relist it for $200?

My only real problem with this is that if you make an honest mistake in your listing and get a bid before you can correct it, you're in trouble.

My 2 cents - this rule should only apply to sellers who do this multiple times. Maybe starting with your third offense over the course of a year, second offense within 3 months? To penalize good sellers who make a mistake here and there is ridiculous.

Once again, a few bad sellers ruin things for the good sellers.

I don't disagree with that, but that wasn't my intention when creating this thread.

I'm all for ebay making their site better for BOTH the buyers and sellers. Unfortunately, the updates they've been implementing lately have been a little skewed in the favor of the buyers.

I think theres probably exceptions that can be made for legitimate reasons if you get in contact with them first.

It does kind of suck for sellers and ebay has a lot of unseller friendly policies.

The big issue is all these policies result from sellers trying to manipulate the system such as charging for shipping too and in an effort to eliminate that ebay comes up with wide spread changes that do in fact hurt legitimate honest sellers from time to time.

I am glad for this rule. Way too many sellers pull auctions because THEY mistakingly started them too low or don't like the low bids they are getting.

IMO, far more are pulled for that than for legit reasons. And sellers shouldn't be listing all over the place either. If you put something up for auction on ebay, then pull it from all other auctions and listings and your B&M shop etc. Isn't right to pull a listing early because you sold it elsewhere. If I have a coin at auction, I don't take it with me to coin shows to try to sell!

This is the only way to stop that abuse!

It also generates more revenue for ebay and Paypal. I sure they looked at that first and all other reasons second.

I get where Buffalo is coming from, but I think this is a horrible idea.

I think we're going to see a lot more reserves placed on items and a lot more higher starting prices. Making it even harder to find deals and steals. I never bid on an item with a reserve, I just feel its a gimick to get you to bid a little more to see if you reach the reserve.

I think it will bring even more shenanigans than what it will get rid of(more canceled bids, more shill bidding).

If these people were willing to cancel their items because the items weren't selling for what they wanted them to, why wouldn't the go the extra steps and start shill bidding?

They're fixing 1 problem but opening the flood gates to a lot more.

I dont think so. You already have that option. Either way I would rather see someone start an item for what they want for it then cancel it because they didnt like the final bid

People do that now that doesn't really change that. If you wanted to shill bid you would do it whether or not you canceled the item. If anything it actually discourages it. Now you can shill bid and if you bid 1 too many times and end up with your own item you can just cancel it. With that you end up paying a fee for that so it discourages you making a bid you arent sure someone would match
