It's an N-6. I wouldn't pay that, but obviously someone is about to.

Perhaps not a bad price for an R-4 coin.

just sold for $2102. I figured it was N10 or N11 because they are R5 and R6. Time to start checking all the 1830's on the bay!

It could be possible that this variety isn't very common in higher grades like this. Just imagine how the seller felt when he/she saw the ending price.

30 N-6 is only an R-4 but almost all of them are either lower grade or higher grade with problems. A nice smooth middle grade piece is rare. The Dan Holmes piece was just a little better than this one and it sold for $3,335

Difference is subtle, but I'd rather have the Dan Holmes coin. The stars are a lot stronger as is the hair. Also has provenance.

Thanks for the clarification. Is there a site or book with population reports concerning die varieties?

Btw I wasnt ever trying to suggest that someone overpaid etc; just curious as to what I was missing...

I recall seeing a chart that translated the R values to a range of surviving examples. Just can't remember where. maybe someone else can dig it up.

Sure am glad I only collect Large Cents by date and not die variety. $2102 for a common date is hard to swallow.

$2100 would buy me a lot of high grade coinage in other areas but to each his own...

Here's a perfect coin if you want an 1830 but aren't concerned about the reverse letter size:

Yes as I said the Holmes coin was a little nicer, but it also sold for $1,200 more. My point was just that a nice mid grade 30 N-6 WILL sell for that kind of money.
