Hey guys! So, my dad was recently at a flea market and came across a bag of coins. The guy was asking $15, but my dad knocked him down to $10. It was my birthday yesterday, so that was part of his gift to me. The bag contained probably 50-75 Canadian and American pennies and nickles from 1930-1970. Now the fun part. As I was digging through these interesting (but relatively common) coins, I came upon a total of 9 Indian Head cents: 1874, 1881, 1887, 1888, 1890, 1891, 1891, 1895, and 1899. Now the conditions are all pretty much the same, far from mint, however, excellent when considering how old and circulated these must be (you can still see every line in the indians feathers on some). Are these worth anything? I've come across various values online (ranging from $1-$20). But I have no idea which sites are realible. What are your guyes opinions? I can post pictures of certain coins if needed (just didn't want to post 18 pictures). Thanks!

They are all worth something over face value, but that is based entirely on condition. Pics would help. No need for individual shots. Just line them up in a grid and take one pic. Sounds like a good start to a collection!

Quote:I came upon a total of 9 Indian Head cents: 1874... Depending on the grade, that 1874 alone is easily worth $10 or more!

The 74 has a low mintage (14,187,500) and could be worth some money depending on the grade. The others have a much higher mintage and worth only a couple of dollars in the lower grades.

How much and/or how many of the letters of the word liberty in the headband can tell us a rough estimate of condition if you are unable to do pics.

Here they are. Sorry for the crappy quality picture (window was open near the top left so the flash didn't have to turn on. And sorry for the date in the corner, couldn't figure out how to turn it off. I just have a bad "point and shoot").

As for the "Liberty" on the head, it's as follows:
1874 - Nothing 1881 - "LI - BT" 1887 - Nothing 1888 - Whole word, faded. 1890 - Nothing 1891 - Whole word, very faded. 1891 - Whole word, faded. 1895 - Whole word, faded. 1899 - Whole word, very clear (still has edge around letters)

Don't feel bad, photography isn't my strong suit, either. If the 1874 is in G, you maybe have $10-15, there. The others, anywhere from $1-5, deduct for any damage. That's how they look to these old eyes. BTW, Happy Birthday, yesterday. That's a nice birthday present, you got a nice variety of them. PS: Can I borrow your dad the next time I go to the flea market?

Much better than I would have imagined for flea market bargain box coins. $10 is a rip!

i'd like to see a close up of the 1874 - I suspect that might be in a slightly better condition than just Good.

Slap the 74 on ebay. Start at .99 cents and watch what happens.

Here is a close up on the 1874 and 1899. The 1899 is the coin, that I think, is in the best condition (even taking in to consideration the slight stain). 1874 Front: 1874 Back: 1874 Front Tilt: 1874 Back Tilt: 1899 Front: 1899 Back: 1899 Front Tilt: 1899 Back Tilt: Whatcha think?
