Is there a log or section of CCF anywhere that can be referred to when topics/threads are moved, locked, deleted, etc? I have two examples:

1. Occasionally I will be following a thread that seemingly disappears. After some digging around and searching through the various forums, I'll find it with a note on it from a moderator that it's been moved to the appropriate forum. Which is fine, but it would be nice to know.

2. There was a topic in the US Main Coin forum today that was (I think?) deleted all together, because I can't find it anywhere, and even though I posted in it, it doesn't show up as a recent topic in my user profile. I assume that it got deleted because some of the participants were getting very political in their responses.

So I'm curious if there's a way to look to see if an article got moved/deleted/locked rather than having to dig around for it. I know some of the newbies who post in the wrong form are probably confused when they can't find their topic and are looking for an answer to a coin question that brought them here. Do you get notified via email or something if your topic is moved?

No. For the most part, it's not needed.

Yes. When a thread is moved, the person who originally posted the thread is automatically sent an e-mail by the forum software, saying their thread has been moved. But I'm afraid everyone else who posted in that thread doesn't also get an e-mail. If you've Subscribed to the topic, the Subscription link will always work unless the thread is deleted or moved to a closed part of the forum. And if you've posted in the thread yourself, the links in your user profile will also likewise work unless the thread is deleted or moved to a closed part of the forum.

In the case of the specific thread in question (MercuryDime's "My Coinage Act of 2013 Proposals" thread), the moderators decided it had indeed become too political, and unlikely to remain non-political for very long even if all the political discussion were moderated out. But rather than deleting it, this thread was moved to the non-numismatic General Discussion part of the forum. This General Discussion area is one of the "closed parts of the forum" I mentioned earlier; it's opt-in only and only available to be opted in by those with more than 50 posts. We made it that way because we didn't want to see what happened at the old CU Open Forum happen here, with an army of trolls joining the forum just to discuss religion, politics and whatnot. If you haven't opted in, you can't see it or any of the threads in it.

If you'd like to opt-in, simply ask here in this thread, or send an e-mail requesting to be added to the General Discussion forum to any one of the admins or moderators, or click on the "General Discussion" link over on the left side of the screen under "Stuff for Members" and follow the instructions there.

Thank you for the explanation, Sap.

I agree that it's generally not needed, but it would occasionally be nice to have. By moving topics and not notifying those who have read it and posted to it other than the original poster, you potentially/unintentionally prevent deeper discussion from the audience who originally saw the thread. I realize the intention is to put the topic in the forum in which it will receive the best attention, but many times those are not the forums that get much traffic. Can't speak to the traffic of the General Discussion forum since I don't (yet) have access. Also, you risk having the folks that are knowledgeable about a topic not weigh in if the thread isn't in one of the two or three forums they visit. Personally I hit three or four threads here regularly based on my interests. And maybe another 3-4 semi-regularly. And for me, part of that is just how much time I'm willing to spend on CCF daily.

I also definitely agree that postings should indeed be reclassified when appropriate; I would just prefer to be notified or have a place to look it up rather than have to hunt down the article after it's been moved. I understand if/that it's not possible; I was just curious.

And yes, that was the thread to which I was referring. Honestly most of the hot air in there was too much for me and my eyes glazed over. I was curious, however, to see how far the conversation would (d)evolve.

Since you've given me the option to be lazy, I hereby officially request to be granted access to the "General Discussion" forum.

Complied.

You should now see a new forum a the bottom of the "General Numismatic Discussion Forums (Non Country Specific)" tree.

I see it, thank you. Sap!

So there have been no additional comments added to that thread since it was moved but was blowing up just prior to the move. Not that I think that thread really should have continued but it's interesting to see the cause/effect.
