Hello World banknote collectors( also I guess I have to say paper money and polymer note collectors to cover everyone): I am considering expanding my numismatic endeavors to include world paper money/banknotes. I have older Pick catalogs, and I just ordered the latest ones from Krause. In looking at the prices from my older catalog and comparing them to dealers lists and online auctions. Prices for notes seem to have skyrocketed in a decade. Should I expect that the Pick catalog values have gone up as much, in other words, do the Pick catalogs reflect present market conditions? Also, can anyone give me an idea if you feel that there are enough world note collectors that trading/exchanging would be practical. I know for world coins there seems to be. I may put a post up to see if I can trade some of my extra coins for notes. I am looking into joining the IBNS as well. If anyone can provided suggestions on how to proceed with note collecting, that are different than the obvious ones I am already familiar with from collecting coins (how about don't wash or iron notes) I would be thankful. Regards, KK P.S.: Don't mention this to the coin collectors in the community they'll think I'm crazy for considering paper over metal.

I am sure they won't think you crazy, lots of us dabble with both coins and notes. I started on coins but in recent years I have found I look far more at my notes, since they are just as interesting and easily stored and displayed. I agree that notes seem to have risen (the desirable and rarer ones certainly) but due to ebay rarity seems to be a thing of the past since you can normally find what you want for sale. Everyone has different approaches and budgets for their collecting so it really depends on you what is best. Good luck enjoy yourself, I hope you make some good trades too :)

There are many ways to collect world notes, there really aren't any rules except to have fun with it. A few pointers would be to follow your coin collecting habits and instincts. If its not something you really like and want don't run out and buy it. Take your time and look around before you make a purchase. Also the Paper Money catalog is just like the Red Book for coins. Prices are not exact and are usually out of date, and did you know there is a Red Book for US Paper Money? that may prove to be useful if you want to collect U.S notes too. And who cares if the coin collectors think paper money collectors are crazy. After all sometimes I tell myself I'm crazy.

If anyone can provided suggestions on how to proceed with note collecting I would suggest referring to the below thread: https://goccf.com/t/89899As far as Krause concerns, its CV does NOT reflect the "actual" market trends. However, it's advisable to consider it as a "reference", just to have an idea about the scarcity of notes you desire to obtain. I usually monitor ebay as well as, reputed auction houses in order to be updated about current market values for notes I desire. For instance, I've downloaded " SPINK PDF auctions" for banknotes since 2005 till date along with their prices realized. I would suggest along with this forum: 1) FaceBook 2) There are plenty of Banknote forums where members are willing to swap P.S. You are NOT crazy at all. Once you are attached to banknotes collecting you'd be obsessed & fascinated, I promise! Cheers

To EgCollector
I'm looking for:
- Egypt 1P 1924 "one camel" (Pick #18) in XF condition
- Egypt 1P 1926-30 "Fallah" (Pick #20) in XF condition
Most important thing, these note should NOT have been chemically treated or washed or repaired or ironed (pure XF).
Do you know a place where I could find such?
Cheers

I have more than one dealer whom I can ask, and I am sure they can get you what you want. I am not into note collecting but I searched the standard catalog of paper money and those two notes you are asking about arent cheep. They are above $1000 US so if you are aware of this and still want me to ask for you, I will be happy to help.

While I agree with EgCollector that, rather than post regarding "manners", there should have been report sent to the staff, I must say that it is not permitted to trade in the main forums and it is absolutely not permitted to offer to buy, sell, or trade with a member who has not reached the minimum amount of posts or membership time.
These rules are in place for the protection of our members. I have removed the posts relating to the trade and hope that this topic will continue with just discussion relating to notes. Thank you.

Could I just contradict James4444
He said he would recommend facebook with a view to trading...let me say I think that's a bad idea.
It doesn't take Einstien to work out much information about someone from their facebook page. I personally would want to advertise to all would be thiefs that it is worth robbing my home because I collect expensive banknotes!

@ DavidUK, Well, I agree with you to certain extent. There are thieves in FB, yet, it doesn't mean that there are no honorable & trustworthy guys there! I've had several successful transactions & trades with some FB members. However, it's an established fact that you might be robbed or cheated if you don't know "them" very well. When buying in FB, I always use PayPal or Money Bookers as a payment method. It's secured as well as, you would get "refunded" if you've been cheated or items were not as described ( the same as it applies in ebay. Instead, you'll be having to raise a complaint in PayPal web page). As far as trading concerns, I usually DON'T swap "rare" items unless the other party is "well" known to me. Thus, it's advisable to swap "penny" items only if you don't know the other person. My 2 Cent Cheers
