Have come to the conclusion that the Draped Bust design is it for me with regard to classical US coinage. The coins that replaced the "atrocious" (to quote Teddy Roosevelt) Barber coinage are justifiably praiseworthy: the Standing Liberty quarter, the Walker half, and God knows, the Saint Gaudens double eagle, are coins for the ages, but none exemplifiy the quintessence of the true American beauty as does Gilbert Stuart's image of Ann Willing Bingham.
The Walking Liberty half is great, especially because of how well it uses the size, but my favorite (as you can see from my icon, is the V nickel. I love the symmetry of the back, and the front looks great in almost any condition, which I think is lost on too many coins. The same goes for the Barber quarter and half. I just got one and want to post pictures soon. I know they're not great, but I just die for how beautiful the face is when it's worn down. It's hard not to love the Buffalo nickel, and I have a soft spot in my heart for the LWC too. I think that pretty much covers everything doesn't it!
My favorite is the Walking Liberty half. Though for some reason it is a series I never collected in any grade and the only ones I have now are in type sets.
For me, number one would be the Standing Liberty quarter. Second would be the 20 cent piece, just because of how cool the eagle looks on the back. And third would be the FEC.
No one can deny the appeal of a well struck Morgan! But the Barber coinage is one of my earliest coin memories from when I was a kid looking through the Photograde book back in school "I have to get one of those!"
A very close second is the Standing Liberty quarter. Kinda strange nobody has mentioned St Gaudens yet. It's just something about silver coinage.
SsuperDdave, I do love the Morgan dollars. Always a great design. Definitely my top 5, tied for third with the FEC. One of my Morgan's, an 1884CC, is very special to me as it was given to me by my grandfather.
1. Morgan dollar! 2. Tie between the St. Gardens double eagle and the Walking Liberty half dollar. 3 Seated liberty... I find that it circulates well and looks good in F-10
