I bought this coin many years ago from a smuggler here in Florida and have always wondered if it is a copy considering the source. He said he bought it in the Cayman Islands. Any comments from the forum would be welcome.

Yeah, this is a copy. Among other things, details on a genuine one are sharp.

Here is a genuine one :

Its nice to see both the real and the fake together, what a contrast!

When I have heard people describe a coin features as sharp I always thought they meant "unworn" as in "crisp" but from the real coin the style is very sharp, like it has been carved out with a chisel almost. In anystate of wear I am sure that it would be discernably different from the fake which has a completely different character despite the similarilty of its design.

Also its worth noting the high carat gold has a very orange appearance, from the photo of the fake it looks like it could be plated or base metals or impure gold at best because the colour of the metal is more silvery that you would expect to see in a fine gold coin. (I am sure that would be even more apperent in the flesh as photographs can enhance or decay colour) Pure gold should be that crumbly orange colour, 22ct there are 2 parts per 24 of another metal (usually silver) so it is slightly less orange.

Excellent description of the sharpness DavidUK :)
Indeed, my coin is a bit worn in some places, but even with this the details remain very strong and visible.

This coin type has many different design variation, in the busts among other things - so it's OK to have differences.
But that first one is clearly a cast copy, and not a good one (they do better stuffs now, way sharper - although still not like real ones)

The color is also a nice indication, I never thought about that actually !
