I recently picked up this 1881 Three Cent piece, I figure I should post it to compare my own assessment with those more knowledgeable than I: And while I have that one posted I figure I may as well ask... Anything I could/should do about that stain? I know cleaning is taboo when done improperly, but a little insight would be appreciated on the matter. Thanks to all who respond -Sybertag

VF-25. I don't think that there is anything that can be done about the stain which would benefit the coin. An Acetone bath may help, but...I'm certain that someone more knowledgeable will chime in.

I have yet to dabble in this series so I am not experienced in the finer grading aspects but by first glance my thoughts are in the VF range with what might be environmental damage in the stain so its a details grading which is not the same as a true VF grading. I see green specs which is a tell tale sign of environment exposure.
I would leave the stain alone. Your liable to kill all the numismatic value if you wind up discoloring the surface from a cleaning.

An acetone bath could help to get rid of the verdigres ( the correct spelling is an anomaly to me ) lol. Grade?

Try a product called verdi care or something like that. The lable fell of my bottle. I have used it many times on all types of coins. Follow the directions and it will improve the overall looks without cleaning your coin. Grade VF-20 to 25

Thanks for all the replies. Looks like I'm not too far off in my own assessment. Good to know. I think ill look into the verdi care, maybe try it on some beat up pennies and nickels before I get anywhere near my older coins with it.

VF25 Details. Appears to be corrosion...at least from what I can tell.

BadThad, one of our CCF folks here, invented Verdi Care & Verdi Gone. Here's a link for Verdi Care at one of his vendors, Wizard Coin Supply: http://www.wizardcoinsupply.com/pro...di-care.htmlI think between acetone and Verdi Care/Gone your stain will fade pretty significantly and you won't hurt the coin. Good Luck!! Let us know what happens!! Note: I can't tell from your pictures if your 1881 3 Cent Nickel has full vertical lines on the reverse columns or not. If so, IMO, it's an EF40 coin. The obverse strike on these coins is often soft on Liberty's hair detail so I find that's not always a good thing to use to determine the coin's grade. I do find the reverse columns' detail works pretty well for an overall grade assessment.

It does in fact have the full lines. I wondered about that myself, as the wear on the front seems to be more evident than on the numerals.
As for the Verdi care, I just got home from a long vacation so I'll be ordering a bottle soon. As for pics, I'll post those after I get some results
