Hey guys! Recently I ran a search on ebay for foreign coins out of curiosity. I noticed people sell bags of random foreign coins for a few dollars. I was wondering if any of you have taken the risk and bought some of these unknown coins. Were you pleased or disappointed? Would you suggest doing it?

I've never tried that but if the price is really cheap and you want some foreign coins, might be worth a try. Again, pending on the price.

I bought a pound of them once for art projects.. I still have most of them. Nothing very valuable, but interesting none the less. I am always surprised at how cheap they are. I wonder if I could take them to a bank for exchange.. hmm..

I bought something like that once, and I never will again. If I learned anything from buying coins off ebay, it's that nothing is ever unsearched. The "unsearched" bag of coins I bought had "including silver!!" in the topic and description. I basically received a bag of junk, no date buffalos, and even a chuck e cheese token. Just be careful when buying lots like this, and always read through the feedback comments.

this really depends on what you expectations are. If you are expecting to find some $25 coin in a $7/pound lot, I think you will be very disappointed. But if you are expecting to find some interesting, yet circulated, world coins worth maybe $0.10 each, then you will be happy. I'm in the latter camp. I love the thrill of finding coins I do not yet have in my world type collection. The problem I have now is that I find very few in these lots because I have most of the ones that get circulated about in the lots (or so it seems).

I went ahead and bought some for a few dollars, but I did check the seller's ratings first. I'll let you know if I find anything interesting! I also bought a few Pakistani coins while I was at it(again, checking the seller's ratings) so I'm looking forward to see what else I got!

Quote: I sent the token to NGC to get slabbed. Are you serious? I purchased two 5lb lots for $15 each + $10 shipping 4 years ago and found a good mix of world coins. I have not seen them that cheap since. The lots had about 10% pre 1900, 30% pre 1950 and the rest were 1950-2006 with only a dozen or so Euro cents in the mix. All total there were 2100+ coins in the batch which I kept around 1000. The rest I put on consignment 200 at a time in the little antique shop about a mile from my house at a price of 5 for a $1. The shop owner keeps 25% and I get the rest. Have one more load to drop off in there and I'll be rid of the unwanted ones plus I have made a tidy little profit off of them.

I think I'll be pleased, I'm the type who just gets excited about a new coin, not about its value. So I'm excited to get my new additions to my collection! Now I just have to wait for them to arrive!

I agree with weavus125. For those just starting out collecting world coins these large lots are great for finding coins from many different countries. Most are usually in the .10 to $1 range. Once you have a more established collection of world coins you will need to look for smaller lots in which you can see the coins ahead of time or you will be wasting you money on many coins you already have.

Just remember the ebay seller has likely already picked through those coins so nothing of significant value can be found. From a coin collector's point of view, I think it would be fun to rummage through them!

When buying lots like that I look at the sellers feedback firrst. I try to avoid sellers that sell a lot of coins, knowing that most have been picked through. Sellers that look like they're just clearing out junk from their house, those are the auctions I look for.

Yeah, I expect that I'll be getting some coins that I already have, but I look forward to getting some new additions, too :)

World coins are fun, jlawson93. I started collecting world coins from my birth year and found some absolutely beautiful coins. ebay is a great way to acquire them, and theyre relatively cheap.
