Why aren't Austrian Silver Philharmonics more popular? If all the government mint stuff is basically just bullion I would think these would be a little more popular because of the lower premium vs. Leafs and Eagles.

Perhaps just not as well known?

I bought a large quantity of Silver Eagles and later bought a similar amount of Maples. I've been thinking that I should buy some Philharmonics if and when I'm ready to make another large purchase due to the relatively low $1.79/ounce premium at Goldmart.com.

I completely agree that ASE and Maples are more popular than Philharmonics. I look at my buying habits, until a month ago I never owned one. One reason for this was availability. The coin shop I frequent, never has any. The only reason they had on on hand was because someone sold some silver that included a Philharmonic. If I went to the coin shop another day, I may not have had the opportunity to pick one up.

I agree with Spider. The don't have as much availability here in the states and very little in the way of longevity. That said, I still buy them on ebay.

I like them the look, but the smooth rims seems to be a turn off for some....

I could care less about that personally. If its .999 silver who cares....

not a big fan of them because of their size (36 or 37mm diameter, smaller than even the maples), smooth edge, and too simplistic of an unchanging design)

I had forgotten about the smaller sizing, Po. I could see where that would be an issue for some, although I actually like the smooth edges, I must admit. But I keep all my coins and rounds in Airtite containers so, other than adjusting for ring size, they're all the same dimensions. Easier for stacking purposes :)

So you do care about it? If you couldn't care less then you would care nil. Given that you "could care less" the only thing I know is you care more than nil.

Wow you twisted a knot in my simple mind there UK Dave, lol....

That logic reminded me of the Princess bride where the Sicilian was trying to decide which cup had the poison in it, too funny rof....

They both did of course, but the Dread Pirate Roberts had been building up his immunity to the poison for years, lol....

The U.S. and Canadian markets know ASE's and Maples better, and are more familiar with them.

I would think the primary market for Philharmonic bullion coins would be Austrian and European collectors.

Same thing as U.S. coin collectors mainly collecting U.S.coins.

Pandas and Koalas and kookaburras also change every year and are very collectible above and beyond their bullion value.

I agree. Changing designs drive interest and add a collectability facet that adds to demand. Maple Leafs probably have the best of both world by producing the classic design in addition to collectible designs annually.
