Using the holes of a generic whitman nickel folder as a guide, I found a well worn buffalo that is slightly larger (more difficult to push into place) than both a Jefferson and a Liberty head... the liberty head seemed smaller still. .... I suppose the difference here is a fraction of a mm, but still.... how close to the same should they be?

Liberty Head, Buffalo, and Jefferson nickels all have the same diameter while Shield nickels are slightly smaller.

I've found some well worn nickels that are larger diameter because they've been mashed at some point.

A worn collar can result in a coin being at most about .01 mm larger in diameter. Typically the tolerance is a few thousandths of a mm.
