I believe this one is fake too then. Bay item # 151004645796. "1936 75th Anniversary Battle of Gettysburg". Sent the seller a message to check out this thread. Thanks nickelsearcher for the valuable info!

This being my first post, it might be a good time for me to ask about "gravedigging" old topics, as sometimes I have a question about a long dead subject. On other forums I see people get bashed for this, But haven't seen any reference to "grave digging" here at CCF. Thanks, Bob.

The item in the ebay listing is a medal not an original coin. I believe it is one from a series of silver pieces produced about 15 years ago - all of the classic commemorative silver coins were reproduced as part of the series. I've sent a message to the seller as well. Hopefully, they will do the correct thing and stop the listing. I also sent a "replica" report to ebay.

Commems ... Recognizing your knowledge of the series I humbly ask why you made the determination this is a medal? Was every classic silver commemorative reproduced 15 years ago? Cripes ... that would cause a lot of issues for newer collectors today. This 'coin' is being sold as a Gettysburg half dollar ... and as such is causing many honest folks to spend $ on a fake. The ebay item I find in the link posted by Hoarder Bob is a counterfeit Gettysburg half dollar being passed off as genuine by a seller with a total of 18 ebay transactions and no returns. There are a 17 bids with current price of $260 with less than 3-hours to go. This particular die struck counterfeit (medal?) appears every now and then ... in my original post it was shown as a circulated example ... in this case it is being passed as an MS example. Sellers photos ... I took the liberty to place the obverse and reverse side-by-side ... Sellers verbiage ... this is a 1936 Battle of Gettysburg 75th Anniversary Half DollarI state unequivocally .. This is a counterfeit coin and someone is about to spend a lot of money with no return to learn that. Quote: This being my first post, it might be a good time for me to ask about "gravedigging" old topics, As a general statement we accept this when new information can be shared that supports the CCF members ... in this case you did exactly that. We discourage reviving old posts if the intent is to add trivial comments. BTW ... Sooo ... I've reported this as a counterfeit. Hoping the high bidder does not get burned ... despite their naivety. David

I need to respond to your queries out of order... Quote: Was every classic silver commemorative reproduced 15 years ago? Yes. The entire 50-piece type set was reproduced as a series of silver medals. From memory, each of the 50-cent coins was reproduced on a one-ounce silver planchet, the Lafayette dollar on a two-ounce planchet and the Isabella on a half-ounce planchet. As US coin designs were not protected at the time, it was OK to copy them as faithfully as possible â€" the series was reasonably accurate but not perfect. I don't recall the pieces being marketed as "coins" and were not meant to be deceptive. Interesting note on the series, the mintage of each was 1/10th of the original â€" for example, 1,000 Hawaiian silver medals were struck based on the original coin's 10,000 mintage. Quote: ...why you made the determination this is a medal? It was based on seeing a few of these pieces in the past. They are nice for what they are, but... Went I saw the first note about this piece above, I went to ebay and sent a note to the seller and to ebay. The seller responded and asked how I could tell it was not a real coin. I explained a few things about his piece vs. an authentic coin and hoped that he would remove it. So far, he hasn't and neither has ebay â€" very disappointing! I'll try to find some additional info on the medal series in my files and will report back if I come across any.

It appears the item was removed from sale - maybe we did some good and saved someone from an expensive mistake!

I wonder why following the link provided above brings up a page indicating the piece was removed or no longer available? I hope ebay intervened after the auction closed!

I am guessing they did - because I had it on my watch list and saw it sold for $440. I also had sent the seller a note yesterday advising them of the "counterfeit" nature of the coin/listing. I hope the seller took it down - but it seems more likely that ebay removed it - since it was after the sell. I know about 4 years ago ebay got involved in a purchase of mine... seller had apparently quit shipping DVD's they were selling due to a supplier issue. I got a refund and for the next 4 days a new DVD showed up... and then the seller was gone and not returning any of my emails. ebay can get aggressive...

Quote: Another good reason to always pay via PayPal. And not with the "gift" option. When you pay as gift, you lose that protection.

ebay offers buyer protection on most sells. The problem is none of us know if the buyer is aware this was/is a fake coin - so they might not even know to request the refund.

"And not with the "gift" option. When you pay as gift, you lose that protection." That is correct. And I see some sellers here want PayPal gift as payment.

As far as the gift option goes, I use it rarely depending on the situation. I have used the gift option when purchasing from a couple of CCF members without hesitation and have never used it outside of CCF.
If one is not comfortable with the terms of sale, either negotiate in good faith or do no make the purchase.
