I've been on the lookout for this date because of the low mintage (just 7565 pieces). When this example came up I jumped on it. What are your thoughts on grade and quality?

It's a decent circulated coin. My guess on this one is AU-55. Looking at price catalogs, this low mintage issue seems very under priced.

for me this is an educational coin. I can see how the lack of wear on the high points would justify the AU grading but the mirrors and even parts of the relief, obverse especially, look torn up to me. My question to the experts is why would a TPG grant this an AU grade versus say a damaged or scratched details assignment? Please share as much of your knowledge here as you are able to, this one confuses me.

Jaobler, no matter what I am seeking for education, its a wonderful looking coin and I wish I had one!

ds, gold is very soft and will pick up contact marks and wear easily. TPG's usually take that into account. This 1889 has very little actual wear, only the high points. It has nice luster and does not appear to be cleaned. This coin is not really torn up.

For comparison, here is an NGC MS-61 to give you an idea of the amount of contact marks you will fine on gold $5's.

understood. I can see how gold would not withstand some of same contact wear other coins might. It's good to know these aspects of the hobby and the industry for making proper investment decisions.

thanks Indian!

The good news is it appears it hasn't been cleaned, which is a huge problem on a lot of these. I agree with the others and go AU50-ish. Very nice piece, and I take it you paid close to what the other higher mintage dates go for?

It appears to grade around a AU-53 possibly AU-55. Very nice coin!

I would grade it AU53. Looks like a pretty nice piece.

Kinda forgot to follow up on this one....

I agree with IndianGoldEagle about the "torn up" observation (of course it's my coin so I'm not objective). Surfaces look exceptionally original to me, with prooflike "flash" and natural patina. As always, the digital photos reveal every nick and abrasion. In hand the coin is obviously "problem free".

I consider it PQ for the assigned AU-50 grade and was very pleased to add it to my collection.

This one seems under graded and might be a candidate for a regrade.
