I have inherited numerous coins from my great grandfather who collected coins from 1930s up until he passed recently at over 100 years old! What are your thoughts? I am trying to have all these insured and could use a little more info. You thoughts on authenticity and grade? It is a nice coin to say the least. Thank you all in advance for your replies.

I am not very knowledgeable with classic gold coins, however I think the coin is a counterfeit, I looked up the coin in the "US coin Facts" to see a picture of a real one, the obverse of your coin just doesn't look right to me. The detail in the hair is different, as well as the shape of the face.

It's called the "Classic Head." 1834 was the first year the design was minted. This appears to be the "second head" variety, with a plain 4, instead of one with a crosslet.

I'm leaning towards an authentic 1834 crosslet 4 Classic Head Half Eagle, high AU (?). It's not a Capped Head. You should definitely place more stock in replies from those with more expertise than I though.

edit: thought I saw the crosslet, but upon further review, not so anymore.

Looks approximately a AU-50 to me. Two problems that I see that could very likely cause this to slab as a problem coin. One, there is a scratch right below Liberty's chin. Second, the coin appears that it might have been cleaned unless it is just the photos. After looking at some auction records of coins with multiple problems, I would guess its value would be around $500ish.

I'm also wondering about authenticity. The 3 in the date looks wrong. Can you check the weight? It should weigh in around 8.3 grams I think.
It appears to be a plain 4 (not the much more valuable crosslet type).

If authentic it would probably sell in the $700 ballpark.
