I have a 1980 P Jefferson nickel that was struck off center big lip on the right and In God We Trust is cut off at the top on the left side. Worth keeping or should it go back into circulation?

Thanks Sam

Hi Sam

Can you post a pic? Is the coin struck the same on both obverse and reverse or is just one side affected ?

Never even looked at the back! The back is normal.

Sounds like a misaligned die strike. They are pretty common if only a small percentage of the design is affected. On the obverse of a nickel I would suggest keeping it if at least half of any of the outer letters are cut off by the mis-strike, and there is at least a coin-thickness area of blank planchet directly opposite the half missing letters. Otherwise it's not even enough to worry about. The really minor ones are pretty common for some years of nickels and cents.
