I am currently in Bolivia and would love to buy a Potosi Cob, unfortunately I know nothing about them, and they are so crude yet beautiful in design I don't know how anyone can be sure any cob is not a forgery! If anyone has any insights into this coin would greatly appreciate it. It has a weight of 27.4g. Thanks.

I have not seen the broken wave design before, I think the waves should be continuous?

Step back and consider that statement for a minute...

Anyway, this is a new one for the files.... that's undoubtedly a cast copy (of an actual piece). With experience, the overall mushy look of (most) cast cobs such as this becomes obvious. While this does appear to have been cast from a genuine piece, the casting didn't seem to go very well, as there are multiple points on the coin where the devices are blobbish and/or have slight stray appendages... AND there are several spots where detail appears to have been tweaked (reengraved) by hand. It IS curious that the piece is a nice and heavy 27.4g (which is essentially full as-struck weight). As casts tend to have air bubbles within, even if done in silver... their net density is usually lower than a genuine hammered planchet... Now, from the photos, the diameter of the obv/rev looks normal, so I'm guessing the planchet must be somewhat thicker than a genuine specimen.

Regarding the waves, that's simply some slight as-hammered doubling on the model coin being reflected on its cast... note how on the word ANO (year), the "O" is doubled as well.

Wow. I do admire your expertize, and thank you so much for the advice. You saved me $170!!, I was afraid to buy it. Its sad to think that all the silver has been removed from Potosi and all the genuine silver coins are gone from Bolivia also. I am curious as to where it has been re-engraved. Most coins of this type appear blobby to my untrained eye, I don“t know how you do it! I had thought of the double strike accounting for the wave pattern but had thought they wouldnt be interlocked. It was the weight that attracted me, it is a solid chunk of silver. The only other cob the seller had (same price) was also an 8 Reale but was markedly smaller and had been shaved down to the point of being only about 13g, I can post pics of this if you are interested. The coin I purchased from the seller https://goccf.com/t/127098
seems so far to be okay, ,but I did note that he had a fake chinese silver dollar. Thanks again for the advice, unfortunately a good weight coin with some of the rim lettering remaining was too good to be true! Regards.
