Looking through some of great-grandad's dimes and found this puppy. I'm assuming this is a RPD, but I can't seem to find it on any variety lists.

After looking at the MM, there is an RPM, too. Looks like the top of an S above the D.

What do y'all think?

Drsandman2,

My guess is the WDDO-004, Class II, distorted hub doubling. Doubling should be clear on the date and E of WE. The reverse is DDR-001, RPM-005.

I found this reference in the Wexler an Flynn treasure hunting Mercury dimes book, there are at least 8 varieties listed for the DDO, and 3 DDR for the 1940 Denver mint, unfortunately for the condition, I doubt that varieties collectors would prefer at least a VF grade than the one pictured.

macmerc,

Thanks for responding, I was hoping you would see my post. I can see doubling in the E of WE under 60x. I also had a hunch the reverse had some doubling, and very pleased to know you picked it out.

I agree with your assessment, but CONECA pairs the DDR-001, RPM-005 with DDO-002. I just want to double check that your reference pairs the DDR-001 with DDO-004. Does it give a population count?

Thanks!

Yes.

The second edition of treasure hunting Mercury dimes was published in 2005 with those reference listing, and its possible that CONECA updated. I don't belong to CONECA, so can't contact them to clarify.

I also notice that the CONECA site hasn't update for a while, wondering if Ken Potter have time to list any new finds.
