I found a 1924 2000 Reis and it is looking like a bronze coin but darker than the 1000 Reis. Numista has this listed as .500 silver. Well, what is the other 50% of this coin. The size matches but not sure of the weight.

I am guessing that these coins may be made of .500 Quaternary Metal, like the British .500 silver coins after 1920.
.500 Ag, .400 Cu, .050 Ni, .050 Zn.

After they were blanked, they were washed in strong acid, then washed, before conversion into planchets before striking.
The acid leached most of the copper and zinc out of the surface, leaving the silver behind. After striking, this left the surfaces of the coin enriched with silver, which was compressed by the striking.

As the coins wear to about fine condition or less, the less fine metal can show through the high points, and discolour more obviously than the enriched silver in the more protected parts of the coin.

Krause lists the 1000 reis coin of this period in aluminium bronze, which when new, would have been a golden colour, depending on the alloy. According to Krause, patterns of the 1924 1000 reis were produced in silver. I seriously doubt if it is one of these. What is the date of the 1000 reis coin?

No 2000 reis in bronze of this period were issued for circulation.

Following Claudio Amato: Brazilian Coin Book, this one is a .500 and has about 2,79oz Ag. Great coin, very collectible here. Produced between 1924 and 1934.
