I've got a number of silver reales (1/2, 1, 2, 4, 8) from the First Republic period in Mexico but haven't had much luck finding any of the smaller reales (1/4, 1/8) that I liked. I got a couple yesterday that I'm really happy with. These are the seller's photos but I couldn't wait to share.

It is purdy! I've been looking for one with decent details on the eagle and wreath for a while and finally found this one. I'm not the best at grading these - any thought as to what this might come out as? Does anyone have a good reference on these guys? I'm working with Krause's NA Guide right now.

VF, maybe EF, these are tough to grade.

My favorite reference for Mexico states coinage is "A Guide book of Mexican coins 1822 to date" by Buttrey and Hubbard sixth edition. The sixth edition is hard to find, but the fifth is ok. Another good reference is "State and Federal Copper and Brass Coinage of Mexico 1824-1872" by Don Bailey. This book is still in print and readily available.

Thanks for the references. I ordered the Bailey book a few days ago and I should have a copy sometime in the next week. I'll try to track down the Buttery and Hubbard. Thanks also for the grade - I'm still learning where to look on these coins.

Very nice. Mexico has a fascinating numismatic history. Some day I will delve into it, but I just can't find enough minutes in the day lately.

If you are interested, one of my favorite sellers has the following coin for sale from the period that you are looking for:

If interested check out http://www.dnecoins.com . Don is a knowledgeable dealer and his prices are fair.

Years ago I bought a hoard (like a bucket) of states coins. The best find was an SLP 1/4 R over-struck on a 1863 centavo. Zacatecas silver presentation is also very cool. If you would like please PM your want list. For grading I use the Mexican Coin Company website. They have pics. offer opinion on grade and are very knowledgeable.

Westwood Arms:
You bought a bucket of these? That would be amazing. I'm interested in trying to get a type set of the state small (1/4 and 1/8) reales together. It's going to be a long term project but it should be interesting and educational. I'll tried to send you a PM but your email option was turned off. My want list on these is pretty large so it's probably easier to tell you what I have so far:

1/4 real, 1834, Federal: VF (above)
1/4 real, 1861, Federal, G
1/8 real, 1842, Federal, G https://goccf.com/t/144900
1/4 real, 1859, SLP: G/VG https://goccf.com/t/144901
1/4 real, 1862, Zacatecas, F
1/4 real, 1861, Sonora, XF

I'm open to any other states and even examples of ones I already have, provided they're upgrades in condition. I'd like to be able to read most of the text and make out the most of the design elements.

Thanks again for your offer to help!
Patrick

serial,
Here's the link to the listing: http://www.ebay.com/itm/11102683954....m1439.l2649
It was about $44US. I think it's a pretty good price, considering the detail and readability of the legends.

The one you posted looks nice too but lacks detail, especially in the eagle. It's a good, problem free coin, however, and I would have paid the hammer price. Nice buy!

Hey I have been off forum for a few weeks (tax time) and will be out for another week.

States coppers are fascinating. Was initially attracted to Zacatecas, then hammer and chisel Guanajuato, then Sonora because they kind of look like US cents, and on and on.

Let me go through the now 1/4 bucket left and see what I can do to help.

Jeff
