So I looked on ebay and saw a not so low serial 5 dollar bill star with bids at like 10 dollars. Here at work there is a 20$ star with the serial 00037005*
Should I get it before I go?

WHY? This, in my book anyway, is NOT a low serial number. Now if the 5 was an 0, it would be a good serial number that I might like, but not like this.

Anybody else want to chime in?

I personally want to see at least 4 leading zeros.

Oddly, I agree with you guys but like I said, I wanted to make sure because I saw a similar 5 bill selling for double face. I figure 3 digit numbers are low, maybe 4

IMHO, the sn needs to start with at least four zeros.

Broseph, not everyone will be so particular about their star notes. Seems low enough to me, so I'm sure in a country of 314 million, you'll find someone who agrees with me. So if you put it on the 'bay and get $30 for a 20 you made some easy cash even after fees. If you still can, I would snag it tomorrow.

I for one would have no use for it as I collect US Currency, not currency numbers. If it an odd number and I need that note for my collection I will try an buy it, but not because of the number or because it has a star.

I do have a few low numbers and a bunch of star notes but I did not buy them because of that and never paid any extra
because of the number or the star.

The $ 50. is what some would consider a low number
The $ 100. is a low number. I did not buy them because of the numbers, I bought them because I needed them to go with my $ 5., $ 10., and $ 20. NBN collection.

Wow, that $100 note is extremely low. Even if it doesn't matter to you, it raises it's value a lot! I think that I will have fun with my bill/ serial number collection for now and maybe someday I will sell them to fund my coin collection or metal detecting gear if I see fit. I think that for now I want to stop selling collectibles in this economy though. I feel it's better to wait until people have jobs>>>money>>>desire for collectibles

Bill, what are the dates on those? They are super nice, and they look high grade, maybe unc?

btw, I didn't get the note. If it was a digit lower I would have gotten it, but I'm actually strapped for cash until I get paid thursday so I only wanted to get it if it was a sure thing. I didn't feel 100% on it having a great premium. I'm sure it had some, but not enough to tie up $20 for me right now, and counteract ebay fees, my time selling it (gotta think photos, description, etc)
It definitely isn't an odd enough # that I would hold on to. It was strictly something I was interested in for selling.

I can't believe I got nothing good today, not even a wheat for consolation. I went through 70ish dollars in change and hundreds of bills (I worked express tonight at Walmart, that's a lot of transactions). The closest bill I got tonight was one number away from being a nice radar (and not in a way that it was bookends). It would have been nice, but oh well. My luck has been on and off lately. Hope I get something good soon, I don't have much longer as a cashier, then it's back to school. Then I'll have a real career and I'll never see so much money again!

Not close to a low number, just to give you an idea, I just found a $20 bill with a serial 00008124 and I still passed it up. It was in rough condition too. Anything under 1000 would be considered low enough that you can make some money on the note in most conditions.

I really don't see the fascination with serial numbers... I can understand a rare signature combination or a rare bill and maybe even that the star numbers are less common but 00037005 is no more relevant to me than 99088762 would be.

Does anybody collect high serial numbers? Each serial number only appears once on any given bill, in my mind that means that they all equal, what note it appears on however is more relevant each having a different age and number printed, not to forget history.

I understand certain numbers are worth morth to some people and if I buy something with a cool number it's a bonus but not one I am willing to pay extra for.

"Does anybody collect high serial numbers?"
I haven't seen a high number yet, but people do. When someone get's a high note they check how many their were in the run, then determine if it was actually high.

I definitely see your point, each number is only made once (per year) and is just as "rare" as the next. However, after seeing a $1 note from recent years in circulated condition with "77777777" go for $338 on ebay, you bet I look at every note that comes through my drawer at work. It's not like I'm wasting time either, I'm on the clock and just in-between customers. Just like looking for wheaties, War Nickels, silvers, and such.

Star notes are just replacements for misprints. Its nice to have it there, but that alone doesn't make a note particularly special. Thats just a bit of info, not a discouragement to collect as you see fit!
Collections should be a personal thing, if if it is a common category for collections!
