I bought a toned Morgan just to see what the fuss is about. The coin's obverse is purple or pink, depending on the lighting and the reverse has a strong purple "ring" of toning that fades as you approach the center.

It's a very pleasing effect.

How much, if any, does the toning affect the grading?

I don't think it effects the grade, that is based on wear and surface damage. It may affect value, raising or lowering it according to the buyers preference.

Mathman, coins are graded by technical merit (luster, strike, number of hits, etc) and eye appeal. The technical merit determines the grade, and a very PQ coin for that grade with attractive color (or other forms of superior eye appeal like booming luster, or cameo appearance while not PL) will often get the coin bumped into the next grade. In other words, a PQ ms63 thats borderline ms64 will often get the MS64 if it has the eye appeal to warrant it. A dog of an ms63 will always be an ms63, even with vibrant color.
Hope that makes sense, it's been a long day.
