Unbelievable!

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...t_500wt_1203

This coin is clearly a 1796-1807 Draped Bust type large cent! Perhaps, there's some sort of mass hypnosis at work here?

No returns or exchanges. Although the cent has suffered extreme environmental damage, the details of the type are quite discernable. The "wreath cent" description must have a magical, hypnotic effect on bidders. Had it been advertised as a "chain cent", there's no telling how much more it might have realized!?

@ExoGuy The chain reverse would be pretty distinguishable, even in that shape. It would take a couple naive bidders to ramp up the bids into huge money.

Well it does have a wreath.

OK the wrong wreath, but it is a wreath. We discussed this on I think Cointalk. The seller was advised that it was a draped bust but he still insisted that it was a flowing hair. The wreath style is rev of 97 and I do believe it is most likely a 1797 cent. (The rev of 97 style began in 1796 and was used through the end of the draped busts.)

Hi Kookoox10 ... You took my comment too literally. This coin is so clearly NOT a flowing hair variety, that I was musing someone being talked into mistaking the wreath for a chain. Also, there was no mention whatsoever of a lettered edge!

I just counted six different bidders, and no questions, not even about a lettered edge? Granted that this coin looks like it was trampled by an army, yet these bidders saw and believed that it was something else. The lure of treasure can clearly distort our vision, our thought processes, methinks.

They say love is blind and I say greed blinds and erases all rational thought. The guys bidding on the coin probably all thought "If only I can get this cheap enough . . . ."

I can almost see how they though it was a wreath cent, but the coin isn't in good enough shape to tell.

It's amazing how a sellers words and peoples ignorance (due to lack of education on coins) will make a recipe for a $376 piece of junk.
ebay never ceases to amaze me whether it be positive or negative.

Buyer beware. Especially if you're not going to do any research or ask any questions before you bid big money on small change.
