Hey all,
I'm relatively new to this whole ancient coin collecting malarkey, and I'm interested in broadening the depth of my knowledge on the area. I'd appreciated some suggestions for books on the area. I've just ordered The handbook of Ancient Greek and Roman Coins, and I think I'm going to stick to more general overviews for the time being, and then move onto more specific guides. All suggestions welcome! Thanks in advance.

DougSmit posted this thread sometime ago, I know a few of us picked this book up for some ungodly good prices. I just got mine in the mail yesterday, I thumb through it and was immediately impressed, based on that and the fact that it has the "DOUGSMIT" seal of approval, its worth picking up.

One of my "go to" books is David Sear's Roman Coins and their Values. I have the 1988 version which I like to use more than the the three volume set, the latest version was printed in 2006 I believe. Speaking of which, my son just sent me the three volume set not realizing I already had a copy. Now I need to sell the second set. But I digress. A couple of other books I regularly use are:

Dictionary of Roman Coin Inscriptions
Legions of Imperial Rome
Ancient Coin Collecting, by Wayne Sales 2 volumes
Reading and Dating Roman Imperial Coins by Klawans
The Twelve Caesars by Suetonius (great reading)

BTW, welcome to Ancient coin collecting. The Dark Side of Numismatics.

to ancient coin collecting.

You will find tons of great information on the web. Doug Smith site would be the place to start.

As mention in some of the others posts Wayne Sayles has a series of books on all areas of ancient coin collecting. The books are cheap at about $25 each but are packed full of information. Another good general reference on Roman coins is David Van Meter's A Handbook of Roman Imperial Coins. It think this book is also within the $25 range. I see these books listed on ebay all the time.

There is also a great deal of knowledge with the folks here on this forum so feel free to visit us often and ask away, I'm sure one of us will be able to answer your questions.

I agree that the Twerlve Caesars was a great read ...

Unlike Bing => I have all of the indibidual Sear's Roman and Greek books and I "love them" ... I spend as much time looking at those books than I do surfing around on the net ... but I like "books" (ther's just something nice about an actual book, compared to a computer screen ... but that's a matter of taste, I guess?) ...

I have them all as well, Jerry. I just prefer the single volume over the multi-volume set.

For "general overviews" of ancient coins, rather than catalogues or price guides, I can heartily add to the recommendations for the Wayne G. Sayles "Ancient Coin Collecting" series. There are six books in all (in volume order, they are: General introduction, Greek, Roman, Roman Provincial, Byzantine and "Non-Classical Cultures"). They're not too expensive and give you an excellent feel for the kinds of coins that are available in each series.

Thanks for all the helpful replies. It's a good thing I like to collect books too, because it looks like I'll be ordering a good few over the next while!!
