I'm guessing this is an 1822 8 Reales, but I'm not sure. What is it? Where is it from? What is an approximate value?

It weighs 26.82 grams and is roughly 37.8 mm in diameter.

Sorry for the lousy pics. The lighting really stinks here. The brighter pics were taken with a flash. The darker pics were taken without a flash and are more accurate for color.

Thanks in advance for your help!

It is a Spanish Colonial 8 Reales from Potosi in what is now Bolivia. It is a common date, value in that grade around $35-$40 would be my guess, the value will fluctuate quickly if silver starts to climb again. Popular type of coin.

I can't see anything wrong with your coin, cwb8539. I can share my coin of the same type to you and I also think mine is real.

Specifications:
37.7-38.6 mm (not completely circular)
27.18 grams
EUR110.00 bought in ebay (June 2012)

I agree - the coin is real - very common but price is a shade low.

The prices are being held down by the garbage that is on the market right now. Too many cheap fakes. The numbers of Class 3 numismatic forgeries is up to nearly 6% overall on ebay based on my study since July 1.

Every time silver is on the upswing the fakes come out in an attempt to draw bidders who know no better.

But here a true price near $50 is about correct in my opinion.

Hi swamperbob, a long gap between discussions in the forum. I hope you are well and your work of the book goes smoothly. When will it be published? I wish I could know what you talk about ehe classes of forgery. How many class of forgeries exist? It is your classification or an universal agreement among the collectors in US or Europe? Tell more to me about the classes of forgery or can you direct me to some threads that you had written about?

Hi Henry - Book takes most of my time. It seems never ending - trying to get terminology uniform and precise while at the same time eliminating little picky errors.

To answer quickly - there is NO universal agreement on categories of forgeries yet. So each book needs to define its terms. We are doing that for this SPECIFIC CASE.

Universal anythings are difficult when each coin is used differently. What is "counterfeit" is different if you are comparing Maria Theresa Thalers with say Athenian Tetradrachmas or with a Susan B. Anthony dollar - so some tailoring is needed.

We are using a 5 category classification - everything fits in those 5 groups. Some coins need more categories - others fewer. All I can say is to wit for a bit.

My threads should be able to be located by the search feature.
