My recent addiction to Lincoln cents has me buying bulk bags of 5000 wheats for 175 and buying memorial bu rolls from the same dealer. My question is do you think its worth it to try and collect wheats to turn into rolls by year/mm even if coin is good to fine or should I be trying to roll only ef+? This is going to be a very hard project but I trying to do a roll of every year and mm of Lincolns, except of course the high dollar keys, and with Gods assistance I'll have about 40+ more years to accomplish. Any thoughts greatly appreciated and welcomed.

Since some of the yearss will be very difficult to acquire, I suggest keeping every condition.

Projects like this are great - you get something big when yuo finish. One of my old neighbours had a HUGE and I mean massive glass jar of pennies and two pennies found on the street or in change. Must have had a volume of 40 or more litres. He filled that with pennies over the course of many years.

Is there a price guide for buying rolls or just the price in book times 50?

The price in the catalog can be extremely misleading. For instance a nice gemmy roll of 1960-D sm date cents is actually worth less than the XF price quoted in the catalogs. Most of the price listed is actually the cost of a dealer packaging and handling coins and the coins have very little real value.
This might sound mean but it's the real world. All of the wheat cents after 1941 are common in Bu rolls. Most of the memorial cents are even more ommon but availability of these is quite spotty. For instance the '69-P or '71-D roll is much less available than the wheat rolls but there's almost no demand for the later rolls so the price is very low.
If you're having fun then, by all means, keep doing it but don't put a lot of money into it without knowing you probably can't get that money back. It's a lot of fun assembling sets of the circulating coinage and some of it really isn't common at all in nice shape. I collect many of the circulating coins myself and it is a blast. I even save a few extra in case they ever get valuable. But there are countless millions of things like 1957-D cents in XF and better and there will likely never be a shortage or any reason people will want to pay more than a handling charge to get them. Dealers won't pay this handling charge so you'll have to retail them yourself and this is a tough business to make money.

Rather than putting rolls together, you should try to complete some albums/folders if you're trying to recoop some of your costs. The demand for later date, common, circ wheat rolls is small. Focus on completing some folders using the highest grade coins you can find.....those will sell.

We aren't really doing it for resell, just for the fun/challenge. We are working on 3 7070's an 8100, 8113 and 8166 currently.

Thank you for the thumbs up. I really want one of those collections that when I'm dead will show my love for this hobby. Now just need some children to leave them too. :-)

This is way cool. There are several reasons I started my collections of circulating coins and this is one of them. Mainly, I guess, I do it because it's so much fun. I did when I was younger collect a roll set of Jeffersons from circulation (except five dates) for fun. Then later I made a roll set of Gem clad for fun (and profit).
