Just be as objective as you can and give me your honest grade. It's going from my kid to a friend of his and they want to remain friends. They're contemplating an arms-length transaction, this isn't charity. There's a little chip going on on the obverse, and the reverse is toning nicely. OK, thanks.

That chip is what they call a BIE. Used to be quite the favorable error. As far as grade I am bad at Lincolns so I will leave that for others.

Ah yes the BIEs! There is an old book out there with hand-drawn illustrations of the many BIEs that have occurred. It is due to a clash with the wheat stalk on the reverse. At least, that is what I was told. Interestingly, all the BIEs I have found were from 1955.

I'm not good at grading Lincolns, but it appears MS.

Drsandman2, these chips are due to a clash of the dies? That's interesting. I've seen corresponding chips on the wheat stalks on some of these BIEs, too.

FWIW, you don't see very many graded later-date LWCs in the auctions, that's why I'm asking for your opinions on this.

MS65BN is how the kids graded this one and it traded at $10 for the tarnish, which, I thought, was at somewhat of a bargain. This grade was a consensus grade of roughly 30 collectors in the club. That's typically how these coins trade in the club. I'll credit myself for having taught the kids to always look over other examples in the series to differentiate such things as wear from strike-weakness, etc., off MS examples. Just a little something they picked up that I hadn't noticed, this one also has a little chip on the wheat stalk. You can barely make it out in the picture. It's still a pretty nice state of the die, though, with no real noticeable areas of stress to the surface.
