I'm hoping that those who own or are familiar with one or both of the coins mentioned in the subject could help me out. Could you have a look at the following and let me know which image more accurately represents the actual appearance of these coins?

Please have a look at the image of the 1Kg coin on this APMEX page:

http://www.apmex.com/Product/65802/...ox__COA.aspx

and compare with the image the RCM's website:

http://www.mint.ca/store/coin/fine-...-prod1140004

If you look at the two side-by-side, you will see differences. For example, the folds on the dragon's nose below the eyes and the water near the bottom.

Similarly, for the lotus coin, if you compare this picture from an ebay auction:

Who-Has-Purchased-The-2012-Yot-Dragon-Lotus-Or-1kg-Coins?

vs. what's shown on the RCM website:

http://www.mint.ca/store/coin/15-fi...-prod1140001

You will see the same difference in nose design as the 1Kg coin above. In addition, the coin shown in the ebay photo has a raised border (ignore the gold-coloured border as I believe/hope that is part of the casing) going completely around the coin whereas there is no raised border in the RCM photo. There are some other subtle differences if you look closely at both images (click Full Screen View on the RCM page).

Does anyone have an explanation for this? Most importantly, which of the above sources more accurately depicts the design of these coins? I would be very surprised if RCM's website was incorrect, however since I'm new at this I wanted to ask the experts here. Someone has suggested that the images on RCM are "artist depictions", however I didn't see any disclaimer that the actual appearance of the coins may differ from what's shown.

I was actually originally investigating the lotus coin and was about to discount the one on ebay as being "questionable authenticity", but then I came across the photo of the 1Kg coin on APMEX. Strangely, the design of the 1KG from APMEX matches the lotus coin on ebay so now I don't know what to think as I wouldn't expect anything from Ampex to be of "questionable authenticity".

I also had an online chat with a rep from APMEX about the 1Kg coin who told me that they get their stock directly from the RCM. Once I pointed out the differences in the photos she said she would check with a product manager and get back to me. I will follow-up here when I hear back from her.

Many thanks for your insight.

I meant to say that photos on APMEX and ebay show 3 folds on the dragon's nose whereas the images on RCM only show a single fold.

While I can't vouch for the authenticity of the coin listed on ebay, I can confirm what you've already been told in terms of the coin illustrations shown on the RCM website -- they are artist depictions and not actual photographs of the coins. The actual coins often do have minor variations from the website's depictions. Personally, on several occasions, I've found that the actual coin is more attractive than the artist depiction.

Also, I would trust APMEX to be selling genuine coins vs. counterfeits. That said, there are known counterfeits of modern precious metal coins out there, so you need to be cautious when purchasing from unknown parties.

Thank you commems for taking the time to reply to my post. I did a search on ebay and all of the listings for these two coins which show actual photographs of the coins (some of which were in NGC holders) are consistent with the photos from the ebay auction and APMEX in my original post.

So now my question has been answered, though I still think the RCM should include a disclaimer about the illustrations, especially for the full screen views.

@gerald: I think there is something in the website's "Term of Use" Page.
